Overanalyzing Animal Farm: Part 2: By David Ulozas

Welcome Back. As this is the sequel to the first part, I expect you to have read the previous one on the first three chapters this one will go into the next 2 chapters, 4 and 5. Also Disclaimer this is absolutely going to be going to into great detail and everything afterwards are spoilers to Animal Farm.

First, some things that should be mentioned in the first one. Boxer, well I’ll let the book describe it. “Boxer was an enormous beast, nearly eighteen hands high, and as strong as any two ordinary horses put together. A white stripe down his nose gave him a somewhat stupid appearance, and in fact was not of first-rate intelligence,” one hand is 4 inches, so Boxer is almost 6 feet tall (4-5). We know from page 18 that he is a big fan of Animalism, the equivalent of Communism (18). And later his strength “seemed more like three horses than one” (29). Basically he is a hard working Bolshevik worker. Also, the Seven Commandments can be reduced to “four legs good, two legs bad,” but don’t birds have two legs (34)? No, Snowball explains, “‘A bird’s wing, comrades,’ he said, ‘is an organ of propulsion and not of manipulation. It should therefore be regarded as a leg. The distinguishing mark of man is the hand, the instrument with which he does all his mischief.’” (34).

That out of the way, lets begin. Snowball and Napoleon send out pigeons to inform the animals on other farms of what happened. They were trying to spread the revolution. Every person has deeply concerned that it could happen to them as did most countries at the time. Then Jones and other men came to take back the farm. It is quite similar to the Russian Civil War. The humans are the white army, and the animals are the red army. After a feigned retreat the animals defeated the humans. In five minutes, they went from marching in, certain they would reclaim Manor Farm to battered, defeated, humiliated, and chased by geese. Boxer almost killed a man with a powerful blow to the head. At the end Snowball and Boxer were awarded medals, and a sheep was awarded one posthumously.

Afterward Napoleon and Snowball, argued about procuring and learning how to use guns or spreading the revolution elsewhere. With Napoleon supporting the former and Snowball supporting the latter. The guns are referring to strengthening the revolution at home and the spreading of the revolution is obvious. Stalin actually supported what napoleon supported and Snowball shares the same ideals as Trotsky did for this matter. Snowball began advocating for a windmill and Napoleon opposed it. In the end though Snowball had won the majority, Napoleon released the hounds on Snowball, chasing him out of animal farm. Afterward he decided that the windmill should be created. The construction of the windmill is similar to that of the 5 year plan. This concludes my over analysis.
